Earth Loops

Loops fall under two categories: closed and open.  Closed loops may be installed horizontally or vertically in the ground or submerged in water (such as
in a lake or pond). Closed loop systems operate by circulating a water and antifreeze based solution through polyethylene piping installed underground.  Open loop systems operate by utilizing existing water from a plentiful source such as a well or body of water.

Vertical Closed Loops
Vertical closed loops are installed by drilling into the ground, typically 100' to 400' deep.  They are the best option when space is limited.  They also have the least impact on the surface landscape.

Horizontal Closed Loops
Horizontal closed loops are typically used when there is adequate surface space available or when drilling might not be an option.  The loops are installed in horizontal trenches varying in length.

Pond Loops
Pond loops can only be installed if an adequate sized pond or lake is available within close proximity. The loops are installed by placing them on the bottom of the pond or lake.  Plate heat exchangers may also be used by   submerging them under the water.
